Notes on Matthew Chapter 10
Introduction
- Matthew records the teachings of Jesus in great depth. You learned that there are 5 major discourses or big talks of Jesus record in the Gospel of Matthew.
The 5 discourses are:
The Sermon on the Mount- Matthew 5-7 2.
The Missionary Discourse- Matthew 10 3.
The Parable Discourse - Matthew 13 4.
The Church Order Discourse- Matthew 18 5.
The Eschatological (end times) Discourse- Matthew 24-25.
As you can see, the Sermon on the mount is one big talk that is spread out in chapters 5-7.
In chapters 8-9, you saw the miracles and events in Jesus's life.
Coming to chapter 10 is another big talk or discourse you see. It's called the missionary discourse.
- Matthew Chapter 10 focuses on the mission Jesus gave to His twelve disciples.
- The disciples are granted authority to drive out unclean spirits, cure diseases, and proclaim the kingdom of heaven.
The Mission of the Twelve: Matthew 10:1-4
Jesus summons His twelve disciples, giving them authority over unclean spirits and the power to heal.
The twelve apostles are listed: Simon Peter), Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew the tax collector), James son of Alphaeus), Thaddeus, Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot.
The term "apostle" means one who is sent.
Matthew has no story of Jesus’ choosing the Twelve
You can see the list of the 12 disciples in four places in the Bible. These lists are consistent in naming the twelve disciples.
[10:2–4] Here, for the only time in Matthew, the Twelve are designated apostles
The Commissioning of the Twelve: Matthew 10:5-15
The disciples are instructed to go only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel- 4 specific tasks.
They are to proclaim, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Instructions: Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons.
They are to do this freely, without expecting payment.
They are not to take gold, silver, or extra provisions for the journey.
The importance of finding a welcoming place to stay is emphasized.
Dealing with Rejection: Matthew 10:14-15
If a town or house rejects them, they should shake the dust off their feet as a testimony against them.
The rejection of their message is compared to the judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah.
Coming Persecutions: Matthew 10:16-25
The disciples are warned of the challenges they will face, being sent out as sheep among wolves.
They will face persecution, betrayal, and hatred because of Jesus' name.
Jesus encourages them to endure, and if persecuted in one place, to flee to another.
Courage Under Persecution: Matthew 10:26-33
Disciples are urged not to fear, as the truth will be revealed.
They are to proclaim openly what is taught in secret.
Fear not those who can harm the body but cannot harm the soul; fear God who can destroy both body and soul in Gehenna.
Acknowledging or denying Jesus before others has eternal consequences.
Jesus: A Cause of Division: Matthew 10:34-36
Jesus states that He has come not to bring peace but a sword, symbolizing division even within families.
Following Jesus may lead to conflicts and separation from loved ones.
The Conditions of Discipleship: Matthew 10:37-39
Discipleship requires love for Jesus above all else, even family.
Taking up one's cross and following Jesus is essential for discipleship.
Losing one's life for Jesus' sake leads to finding true life.
Rewards: Matthew 10:40-42
Those who receive the disciples receive Jesus and the One who sent Him.
Rewards are promised for receiving prophets and righteous individuals, even for simple acts of kindness to disciples.
Conclusion
Matthew Chapter 10 teaches us about the challenges, responsibilities, and rewards of discipleship. It emphasizes the importance of boldly proclaiming the message of the kingdom, enduring persecution, and prioritizing loyalty to Jesus above all else. The chapter provides valuable lessons for followers of Christ at every stage of their journey.
