* [7:28–29] When Jesus finished these words: this or a similar formula is used by Matthew to conclude each of the five great discourses of Jesus (cf. Mt 11:1; 13:53; 19:1; 26:1).
1. Judging Others (Matthew 7:1-5) Jesus advises against passing judgment in an arrogant manner.
Key Verse: "Stop judging, that you may not be judged." (Matthew 7:1)
2. Pearls Before Swine (Matthew 7:6) Use discernment in sharing valuable teachings; not everyone may appreciate them.
Key Verse: "Do not give what is holy to dogs or throw your pearls before swine." (Matthew 7:6)
4. The Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12)
Key Verse: "Do to others whatever you would have them do to you." (Matthew 7:12)
Matthew 7:12: "Do to others whatever you would have them do to you." This summarizes the Law and the Prophets.
5. The Narrow Gate (Matthew 7:13-14) Urges choosing the path of righteousness, though it may be challenging.
Key Verse: "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many." (Matthew 7:13)
6. False Prophets (Matthew 7:15-20) Emphasizes obedience over mere professions of faith.
Key Verse: "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but underneath are ravenous wolves." (Matthew 7:15)
7. The True Disciple (Matthew 7:21-23) Emphasizes obedience over mere professions of faith.
Key Verse: "Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven." (Matthew 7:21)
8. The Two Foundations (Matthew 7:24-27) Highlights the importance of acting on Jesus' teachings.
Key Verse: "Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock." (Matthew 7:24)
Conclusion (Matthew 7:28-29)
Matthew 7:28: Crowds are astonished at Jesus' teaching.
Matthew 7:29: Jesus teaches with authority, distinguishing from the scribes.
These teachings cover important aspects of Christian living, focusing on love, discernment, prayer, and obedience to God's Word.
