Jesus corrects the three devotional pillars of Judaism: Almsgiving, prayer, and fasting. He not only corrects them but also them how to properly perform Almsgiving, prayer, and fasting.
Jesus teaches the disciples to adopt four specific mindsets.
Lord’s prayer teaches how to pray, NOT what to pray.
Jesus never prayed Lod’s prayer. How do you know? Hint--12and forgive us our debts. Jesus, sinless, did not recite the Lord's Prayer himself, as reflected in the line "forgive us our debts"
Almsgiving (Matthew 6: 1-4)
Jesus advises against performing good deeds for the sake of receiving praise from others.
Giving alms (charitable donations) should be done in secret, without seeking recognition.
God, who sees in secret, will reward those who practice genuine acts of kindness.Prayer (Matthew 6: 5-15)
Prayer should not be a show for others; it's a personal communication with God.
Jesus encourages praying in private, emphasizing sincerity and authenticity.
The Lord's Prayer (Our Father) is introduced as a model for prayer, focusing on God's name, kingdom, and will.
Fasting (Matthew 6: 16-18)
Fasting should not be done to gain attention but rather as a personal and humble practice.
Maintain a positive appearance while fasting, and let it be a private commitment to God.
4 Mindsets for disciples
Treasure in Heaven (Matthew 6: 19-21)
Earthly possessions are temporary, and it's more important to focus on heavenly treasures.
Your heart follows where your treasure is, emphasizing the importance of spiritual priorities.
The Light of the Body (Matthew 6: 22-23)
Spiritual insight is compared to the function of the eye; a healthy perspective leads to a fulfilled life.
Emphasizes the importance of maintaining a clear and positive spiritual outlook.
God and Money (Matthew 6: 24)
Serving both God and material wealth (mammon) is impossible; a choice must be made.
Jesus warns against the pitfalls of being devoted to material possessions at the expense of spiritual well-being.
Dependence on God (Matthew 6: 25-34)
Encourages trust in God for life's necessities rather than excessive worrying.
God cares for His creation, and humans are more valuable than birds or flowers.
Prioritize seeking God's kingdom and righteousness, and trust that God will provide what is needed.
