Study notes Matthew Chapter 27:

1.      Counsel Against Jesus (Matthew 27:1)

-          Chief priests and elders conspire against Jesus, seeking counsel to put him to death.

2.      Jesus Handed Over to Pilate (Matthew 27:2)

-          Jesus is bound, led away, and handed over to Pilate, the Roman governor.

3.      Judas' Regret (Matthew 27:3)

-          Judas, witnessing Jesus' condemnation, deeply regrets betraying Him.

-          He returns the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.

4.      Fate of the Silver (Matthew 27:5-7)

-          Judas throws the money into the temple, expressing remorse.

-          The chief priests use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place.

5.      Jesus Before Pilate (Matthew 27:11-14)

-          Pilate questions Jesus about being the King of the Jews.

-          Jesus remains mostly silent during accusations from the chief priests and elders.

-          Pilate is greatly amazed by Jesus' lack of defense.

6.      Pilate's Attempt to Release Prisoner (Matthew 27:15-18)

-          Pilate offers to release a prisoner during the Passover feast.

-          He presents the choice between Barabbas, a notorious criminal, and Jesus called Messiah.

-          Pilate recognizes the envy of the chief priests.

7.      Pilate's Wife's Warning (Matthew 27:19)

-          Pilate's wife warns him in a dream about the innocence of Jesus and advises him to have

8.      Crowd Chooses Barabbas (Matthew 27:21-23)

-          The chief priests and elders influence the crowd to choose the release of Barabbas over Jesus.

-          The crowd demands Jesus' crucifixion.

-          Pilate questions the reason but is met with louder cries for crucifixion.

9.      Pilate Washes His Hands (Matthew 27:24)

-          Pilate, seeing the situation escalate, washes his hands, declaring innocence, and places the responsibility on the people.

-          The people accept responsibility for Jesus' death.

10.  Soldiers Mock Jesus (Matthew 27:27-31)

-          The soldiers take Jesus into the praetorium, strip Him, put a scarlet cloak and crown of thorns on Him, and mock Him.

-          They spit on Him, strike Him, and taunt Him as the King of the Jews.

11.  Simon of Cyrene (Matthew 27:32)

-          Simon of Cyrene is compelled to carry Jesus' cross.

12.  Crucifixion at Golgotha (Matthew 27:33-38)

-          Jesus is crucified at Golgotha between two revolutionaries.

-          Soldiers divide His garments by casting lots.

-          The charge against Him is placed on a sign above His head.

-          People passing by revile Him.

13.  Mockery at the Cross (Matthew 27:39-44)

-          Passersby, chief priests, and scribes mock Jesus, challenging Him to save Himself.

-          They ridicule His claim to rebuild the temple in three days.

-          Even the two criminals crucified with Him join in the mockery.

14.  Darkness and Jesus' Cry (Matthew 27:45-50)

-          Darkness covers the land from noon to 3 PM.

-          Jesus cries out in Aramaic, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" meaning, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

-          He gives up His spirit with a loud cry.

15.  Veil Torn and Earthquake (Matthew 27:51-54)

-          The veil of the sanctuary is torn in two from top to bottom.

-          An earthquake occurs, rocks split, and tombs open.

-          The centurion and soldiers recognize Jesus as the Son of God.

-          Many women who followed Jesus witness these events.

16.  Joseph of Arimathea (Matthew 27:57-61)

-          Joseph of Arimathea, a rich disciple, requests Jesus' body from Pilate.

-          He wraps the body in clean linen and places it in his new tomb.

-          Mary Magdalene and the other Mary witness the burial.

17.  Guarding the Tomb (Matthew 27:62-66)

-          The next day, the Pharisees and chief priests request a guard for Jesus' tomb.

-          They express concern about potential disciples stealing the body and spreading a resurrection claim.

-          Pilate grants them a guard to secure the tomb.

-          They seal the stone and set the guard in place.
