Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13):
Found only
in Matthew
- Setting:
The kingdom of heaven is compared to ten virgins waiting for the arrival of the
bridegroom.
- Virgins:
Five were foolish and five were wise.
- Lamps: All
virgins took lamps.
- Oil = good
deeds: The foolish virgins lacked oil for their lamps.
- Sleeping:
All virgins, both foolish and wise, fell asleep while waiting.
- Cry at
Midnight: A cry announced the imminent arrival of the bridegroom.
- Request
for Oil: Foolish virgins asked the wise for oil, but they refused, stating
there might not be enough.
- Arrival of
the Bridegroom: While the foolish virgins went to buy oil, the bridegroom
arrived, and those ready entered the wedding feast.
- Locked
Door: The door was locked when the foolish virgins returned.
- Rejected
by the Bridegroom: The foolish virgins pleaded to enter, but the bridegroom
said he did not know them.
- Lesson: stay
awake = be prepared, for the day and hour are unknown (Matthew 25:13).
Parable of
the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30):
- Setting: A
man going on a journey entrusts talents (money) to his servants.
- Distribution
of Talents: Each servant receives talents according to their ability.
- Actions of
Servants:
- Five Talents: Invested and gained five
more.
- Two Talents: Invested and gained two more.
- One Talent: Buried it in the ground.
- Master's
Return: After a long time, the master returns and settles accounts.
- Praise for
Faithful Servants: The master commends the faithful servants, saying,
"Well done, my good and faithful servant."
- Consequence
for Unfaithful Servant: The servant who buried the talent is called wicked and
lazy. The talent is taken away and given to the one with ten talents.
- Lesson:
Use talents wisely; those who have will receive more, and those who have not
will lose even what they have (Matthew 25:29).
Judgment of
the Nations (Matthew 25:31-46):
- Setting:
The Son of Man comes in glory, separating nations as a shepherd separates sheep
from goats.
- Criteria
for Judgment:
- Acts of mercy toward the least ones
(feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming strangers, clothing
the naked, caring for the ill, visiting prisoners).
- Outcome
for the Righteous (Sheep): Inherit the kingdom, eternal life.
- Outcome
for the Accursed (Goats): Depart into eternal fire, eternal punishment.
- Explanation
for Judgment: Whatever is done or not done for the least ones is done or not
done for the King (Jesus).
- Lesson:
Acts of mercy towards others reflect one's relationship with God, impacting
one's eternal destiny.
Additional
Points:
- Timing of
the Cry: The cry announcing the arrival of the bridegroom occurred at midnight.
- Response
of the Wise Virgins: They refused to share their oil and directed the foolish
virgins to the merchants.
- Response
of the Foolish Virgins: They went to buy oil and returned to find the door
locked.
- Response
of the Unfaithful Servant: He buried the talent out of fear, calling the master
a harsh man.
- Comparison
to a Shepherd: Jesus describes the separation of nations using the analogy of a
shepherd separating sheep from goats.
- Question
of the Righteous: The righteous express surprise at the king's words, asking
when they performed these acts of mercy.
- Eternal
Fire Prepared for the Devil: The eternal fire is prepared for the devil and his
angels, emphasizing its severity.
- Impact of
Actions: Both parables stress the impact of actions on one's eternal destiny,
urging believers to be prepared, faithful, and merciful.

- Matthew 25:13: "Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour."
- Matthew 25:21: "His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’"
- Matthew 25:46: "And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
