Study Notes on Matthew Chapter 26
1. Conspiracy Against Jesus (Matthew 26:1-5)
- Jesus predicts his crucifixion during the Passover festival.
- Chief priests and elders plot to arrest and kill Jesus secretly.
- They decide not to act during the festival to avoid public unrest.
2. The Anointing at Bethany (Matthew 26:6-13)
- Jesus is anointed with costly perfumed oil by a woman at the house of
Simon the leper.
- Disciples criticize the "waste" of the oil, but Jesus
defends her, emphasizing the significance of the act.

Jesus mentions that this anointing is in preparation for his burial.
3. The Betrayal by Judas (Matthew 26:14-16)
- Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, agrees to betray Jesus to the chief
priests for thirty pieces of silver.
- Judas seeks an opportunity to hand Jesus over.
4. Preparations for the Passover (Matthew 26:17-19)
- Disciples ask Jesus about preparing for the Passover.
- Jesus instructs them to go into the city, find a man, and prepare for
the Passover in his house.
- Disciples follow Jesus' instructions.
5. The Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26-30)
- During the Passover meal, Jesus institutes the Lord's Supper.
- He takes bread, blesses it, and shares it, symbolizing his body. He
does the same with the cup, symbolizing his blood.
- Jesus emphasizes the forgiveness of sins and anticipates a future
banquet in the kingdom.
6. Peter’s Denial Foretold (Matthew 26:31-35)
- Jesus predicts that all the disciples will be shaken in their faith.
- Peter confidently asserts his loyalty but is told by Jesus that he
will deny him three times.
- Other disciples express similar determination.
7. The Agony in the Garden (Matthew 26:36-46)
- Jesus goes to Gethsemane with his disciples to pray.
- He expresses deep sorrow and distress, praying for God's will to be
done.
- Disciples struggle to stay awake, and Jesus rebukes Peter for
sleeping.
8. The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus (Matthew 26:47-56)
- Judas arrives with a crowd carrying swords and clubs to arrest Jesus.
- Judas identifies Jesus with a kiss.
- Jesus rebukes violence, stating that scripture must be fulfilled.
- Disciples flee, fulfilling Jesus' earlier prediction.
9. Jesus Before the Sanhedrin (Matthew 26:57-68)
- Jesus is brought before Caiaphas, the high priest, and the Sanhedrin.
- False witnesses present conflicting testimony.
- Jesus remains mostly silent but acknowledges his identity when asked
directly.
- The high priest accuses him of blasphemy.
10. Peter’s Denial of Jesus (Matthew 26:69-75)
- Peter denies knowing Jesus three times, as predicted.
- He weeps bitterly upon realizing his denial.
- This event highlights the human struggle and Peter's eventual
repentance.
