Notes for Matthew Chapter 18

Matthew 18 teaches us the importance of humility, dealing decisively with sin, seeking the lost, addressing sin within the community with love, and embracing limitless forgiveness. These lessons guide us towards a Christ-like character and relationships within the community of believers.

Chapter 18 has the 4th big talk of Jesus: The Church order discourse

1. The Greatest in the Kingdom (Matthew 18:1-5):

   - Disciples inquire about greatness in the kingdom of heaven.

   - Jesus emphasizes childlike humility as the key to entering the kingdom.

   - To be great, humble yourself like a child; receiving others in Jesus' name is receiving Him.

2. Temptations to Sin (Matthew 18:6-9):

   - Causing others to sin is serious; severe consequences are better than leading others astray.

   - Radically address personal sins to avoid eternal consequences.

   - Take sin seriously; address it decisively.

3. The Parable of the Lost Sheep (Matthew 18:10-14):

   - God's concern for the lost.

   - God rejoices when even one lost soul returns.

   - Care for those who stray; every soul is valuable.

4. A Brother Who Sins (Matthew 18:15-20):

   -  The four steps we are to follow when a Christian “brother” or “sister” has fallen into error in Mt 18:15-18

    - Addressing sin within the community.

   -  Private correction, escalation with witnesses, involvement of the church.

   -  God ratifies the church's judgment; prayer's power in unity.

   -  Correct with love; unity in prayer is powerful.

   - The authority Jesus gives to the Apostles in 18:18 is the same given to Peter in 16:19 and stated in the same words except the pronoun and verbs are in the plural

5. The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (Matthew 18:21-35):

   - Peter asks about forgiveness limits.

   - Forgive without limits, illustrated by the parable.

   - God's immense forgiveness requires us to forgive others.

   - Failure to forgive jeopardizes one's own forgiveness.

1. Correction process: Private correction, then escalation with witnesses; church involvement in the final step.

2. Authority in church discipline: Actions on earth ratified in heaven; disciples have authority in church discipline.

3. Prayer and unity: Agreement in prayer affirmed by heaven; Jesus' presence assured in gatherings.

4. Unlimited forgiveness: Peter's question on forgiveness limits; teachings on boundless forgiveness.

5. Parable of the Unforgiving Servant: God's forgiveness requires human forgiveness; warning that lack of forgiveness risks losing one's forgiveness.
