 Matthew Chapter 1 Notes

The Genealogy of Jesus and The Birth of Jesus

The Genealogy of Jesus and The Birth of Jesus

Matthew Chapter 1 is the beginning of the New Testament in the Bible.

It tells us about the family history of Jesus and how he was born.

The Genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:1-17):

The chapter starts by saying it's about the family tree or genealogy of Jesus. This means it shows how Jesus is related to other important people in history.

Jesus is called the "Son of David" and the "Son of Abraham," which means he comes from a very special family.

The genealogy lists some famous names like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, David, Solomon, and others. These were all important people in the history of Israel.

There are 5 women in the genealogy of Jesus.

The women Tamar (Mt 1:3), Rahab and Ruth (Mt 1:5), and the wife of Uriah, Bathsheba (Mt 1:6), in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1 highlight how God's plan unfolded in unexpected and unique ways.

Please note that Bathsheba's name is not mentioned, but she is identified as the wife of Uriah

Joseph's name is mentioned, and he is referred to as the husband of Mary.

These women faced unusual situations, like Tamar ensuring her family's future in a special way, Rahab being a former outsider (Jericho), Ruth being from another nation (Moab), and Bathsheba's connection to David starting with scandal.

All these "irregularities" show that God can work through unconventional paths to accomplish His plans.

The genealogy is divided into three parts, each with 14 generations. It connects Jesus to Abraham, King David, and finally, the birth of Jesus.

In its first two sections (Mt 1:2–11) it was drawn from Ru 4:18–22;

1 Chr 1–3.

Except for Jechoniah, Shealtiel, and Zerubbabel, none of the names in the third section (Mt 1:12–16) is found in any Old Testament genealogy.

The Birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:18-25):

The genealogy is divided into three parts, each with 14 generations.

Gospel teaches us that God's plans often surprise us, and His way of working things out is beyond our expectations.

It connects Jesus to Abraham, King David, and finally, the birth of Jesus

This part of Matthew Chapter 1 talks about how Jesus was born.

Joseph, who was going to be Mary's husband, wanted to break off the engagement quietly because he was a good and fair man.

The angel addressed Joseph in his dream: Joseph, son of David

The angel explained that the baby was from the Holy Spirit, and Joseph should take Mary as his wife.

The angel said they should name the baby Jesus because he would save people from their sins.

All of this happened to fulfill what the prophet Isaiah said about a virgin having a child, and the child being called Emmanuel, which means "God is with us."

The story of Jesus' birth tells us who Jesus is

  1. the savior of his people from their sins (Mt 1:21),

  2. Emmanuel in whom “God is with us” (Mt 1:23), and

  3. the Son of God (Mt 2:15).

Summary:

Matthew Chapter 1 introduces us to Jesus' family tree, showing how he is connected to important people in history. It also tells the story of Jesus' birth, emphasizing that it was a special and miraculous event, fulfilling prophecies from the Old Testament.

Key Lessons

1. God can use anyone, no matter their background, to be part of something special.

2. Jesus' birth was a miracle, and it fulfilled the promises God made in the Old Testament.

3. The story teaches us about trust and obedience to God, as seen in Joseph's response to the angel's message.
